Bad advice, bad breath, and bad movies

Cures for bad breath, bad advice, and bad films

Cures for bad breath, bad advice, and bad films

Mercury Toastmasters Club – 23 April 2014

We had a couple of “firsts” tonight. Eliza as Toastmaster of the Evening skillfully led us through the agenda. Robert gave his first evaluation with keen observation and gentleness.

Four prepared speeches by four very different speakers guaranteed we’d all be paying attention.

Violetta gave us advice she’d never give her clients. “How to Ruin Your Life” was a superb example of reverse psychology encouraging us to do exactly what our inner devil tells us. Stefan brought us into the world of real estate with his factual account of how to become a developer. And Renko amused us with the history of “Listerine” mouthwash. Watching props multiply as Renko placed product after Listerine product in front of us clearly demonstrated the power of marketing. And I took a sideways look at humour through the lens of blind jokes. Between laughs we couldn’t help but examine our attitude towards disabilities.

Deeply disappointed in the current film scene, Pascal challenged four speakers to pitch their ideas for new movies. The catch was they had to develop the story using three words he selected and a genre they pulled out of the hat. There was a horror film involving a watermelon; a romance with a pen; a drama with a baby monkey looking for toothpicks; and a briefcase comedy. We’re all looking forward to the next round of Oscars!
