Don’t Waste a Day!

At our meeting on the 24th of September, our lovely Toastmaster of the Evening Johanna smoothly conducted the evening. She pointed out the importance of the CL manual and encouraged every functionary to receive a written evaluation for his/her role. At Toastmasters, we not only train speaking skills, but also leadership skills (along with an entire list of other skills).

On that evening, we had three great speeches: a CC #5 given by Violetta and rehearsals of the Fall Contest winning speeches.

Violetta delivered a humorous speech and told the story about how she almost lost her right ear. It happened some years ago, late in the evening, when she wanted to take off her two-part earrings: instead of coming out, they went even deeper into her ear. The color of her ear started to match the color of a tomato. She continued with her visit to the emergency room and the final diagnosis of the doctor: “foreign object in the ear”.

Renko and Robert represented Mercury at the Area contest on Saturday, 27th of September and won! They will go further and represent Mercury at the Division contest on the 18th of October.

Marina nicely moderated the Table Topics session and also won the functionary of the evening. She wanted to know more about us, to forget about the smalltalk and “go straight to the beef, to the deep questions”. This is what we found out:

Prateek told us about his best friends, who have four legs and a tail. He likes dogs, because the friendship they provide is unconditional.
Matthias pointed out that stories are the operating system of the brain, because without stories there would be no life.
Magdalena told us that she would like to make each day of her life such an experience, that she could say “Wow! Nice day, nice experience!”. The title of her book would be “Don’t waste a day”- every day should be a story by itself.

Word of the day: Cogent, which means (of an argument) clear, logical, and convincing:
They put forward cogent arguments for EU membership.
He makes a cogent argument for a more egalitarian education system.

Lesson learned: Be careful what you put into your ears 🙂
