Last week, our club proved its flexibility, improvisation skills and sense of humour. Our usual meeting venue at Carmerstr. 10 (c/o Psychologische Praxis) was not available, so at short notice we moved to a fairly small room at the nearby Kabir Restaurant. It was rather cramped and hot. But nonetheless we had a very entertaining meeting, we even had candlelight and cold drinks!

We'll kick off the new year in style at our first meeting of 2011 with three advanced speeches. Wolfram will take another step closer to completing his Advanced Communicator Bronze with speech number 7, Wendy will begin her Advanced Communicator Gold and fresh from completing his Competent Communicator, Christian S. will work towards his Advanced Leader Bronze by explaining how to Delegate to Empower. All in all, an exciting selection of speakers.

There will be the very first cake of 2011 at Mercury while we enjoy the break before visiting toastmaster Sari takes charge of the Table topics, our impromptu section of the evening which is always fun and also open to guests should they wish to participate.

Our meetings train confidence and powerful communication skills but whatever your level and experience, there is always something to learn. Guests are always most welcome to come along to any of our meetings to see how they too can benefit from being part of our club. For more information about how the evening works, please use the link below to get our agenda (please check it for last minute changes regarding speeches):

http://www.mercury-toastmasters-berlin.de/public/agenda.php

At our next meeting, we have a truly packed agenda with four speeches scheduled. After her impressive evaluations, Christine will make her Mercury speaking debut with her icebreaker, then Christina will celebrate her birthday in style with project three, focusing on getting to the point. Lisa and Sabine will also focus on the same objectives so it promises to be a fascinating glimpse into how versatile the same speech project can be. All speakers are working their way through the competant communicator manual.

Christina has promised us birthday cake for the break before we prepare ourselves for Waltraud's Table Topics. Last time, they were entertaining and quirky so I think it's safe to assume we can expect more of the same. Guests are also very welcome to participate in this impromptu part of the evening which develops our extemporaneous speaking skills.

Our speakers, evaluators and functionaries have serious goals which they wish to reach by supporting each other but still, there remains a spirit of light heartedness and good humour at our meetings which makes everything easier. It's always a pleasure to share that with the guests who come along so why not be part of our next meeting?

After the excitement of our autumn contest last time, we'll return to our regular format with four speeches lined up. After his impressive icebreaker, Kristoffer will work on organising his second speech which Christian S. inches ever closer to finishing his Competent Communicator with his eighth speech using visual aids. I will press on through my Advanced Communicator Silver with the second project aiming to inspire while Wendy will continue powering towards her Advanced Communicator Gold with a reading. Four different speakers working on four very different projects which promises to be a fascinating evening.

The cake of the day will have an autumn flavour and after some refreshment, Wolfram will be in charge of the Table topics and if it's half as entertaining as his previous speeches, we're in for something special and challenging. Guests are most welcome to take part in this section which focuses on training impromptu speaking skills.

Whatever your aims and experience, Toastmasters has something that meets your needs. Learn to feel more confident, try things out without any stress of losing face in a work environment, lose those crippling nerves of speaking in front of an audience and most of all, have fun. Interested? Then please come along. Guests are always welcome and there's no need to register beforehand. For more details about the format of the evening, please use the link below to get our agenda (please check it for last minute changes regarding speeches):

http://www.mercury-toastmasters-berlin.de/members/agenda.php

There were nerves but also laughs aplenty at our autumn contest last week. To kick off, we enjoyed two humourous speeches by Johanna and Wolfram. Johanna explained more about the ins and outs of her turbulent love affair with Berlin before Wolfram transported us to Taiwan and filled us in on the tricky business of integrating into the culture. Sadly we ran out of time before he could explain the secrets of making lots of money there and the mysteries of Taiwanese girls! It must have been a tough call for the judges but Wolfram claimed first place with Johanna in second.

There was cake and time to relax and chat as the votes were counted and then in the second half, we heard Johanna, Waltraud, Christine, Wolfram and Christian take on the Table Topics and explain about the leaving present they had chosen for their boss' retirement. The contestants showed a great deal of humour and imagination in this thoroughly entertaining section. Again, the judges pondered over their voting ballots but Johanna emerged as the winner, followed by Wolfram with Christine in third place. Well done to all contestants on their achievements! It was a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining evening for everyone present. Bring on the area contest!

At our next meeting there will once again be four speeches but this time with a slightly different twist. Christian will take a further step towards his Advanced Communicator Bronze with project number four while Wendy will give her final speech as part of her Advanced Communicator Silver. Then we will have an educational speeches by Christian S. who will tell us more about goal setting as part of his Advanced Leadership Bronze and finally Charles will round off the evening with an informative speech. It's extremely rare to have a mixture of all these projects in just one evening so don't miss it!

The cake of the day will reflect the summer colours and flavours and after some much needed refreshment, Sabine will make her debut as Table Topics Mistress, the part of the evening where any of us members (and also willing guests!) can be called upon to answer a question on any given subject for 1-2 minutes. It can be nerve wracking but still enjoyed by all.

The particular flavour of our meetings changes according to what's on the agenda but there's always the supportive and inspiring atmosphere for us to try things out in and improve our communication skills so why not join us next time?

For more details about what will hapen during the evening, please use the link below to et our agenda (please check it for last minutes changes regarding speeches):

http://www.mercury-toastmasters-berlin.de/public/agenda.php

(ACB, CL)

I feel the new board represents an excellent mix of experienced and new members and that this will be a strong team to lead Mercury onto even bigger and better things over the next year. Unfortunately, our nominee for Vice President Public Relations could not be with us that evening so we will have the election for this position at our next meeting. Stay tuned for an update!

On the schedule next time, we have three speeches scheduled. New member Lisa will make her Mercury debut and break the ice. Then Wolfram and Adam will continue working towards their Advanced Communicator Bronze by delivering speeches which aim to persuade but with very different emphases. Wolfram will focus on a hot topic, the financial crisis and its causes, while Adam will delve into the workings of the mind with a speech about spirology. All in all, a rich and extremely varied speaking section which you wouldn't want to miss.

As a change to our regular format, there will be no Table Topics next time to get our pulses racing but instead the election of Mercury's new board for the beginning of the Toastmasters year which will start 1st July. I know that I'm very much looking forward to seeing the new line-up.

As a guest, you're free to come along to our meetings as often as you like. There's no need to register beforehand and no pressure from us to join. Experience for yourself the unique atmosphere we have here at Mercury which makes it an inspiring and supportive place to practise and develop your communication skills.
