Many of our first-time guests say that they are surprised how well organised our meetings are. And this seems to imply that &lt;b&gt;we all invest a lot of energy&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We do! All the more, one of the findings of a survey amongst our members fascinates me.&lt;p /&gt;&lt;p&gt;We asked our members for &lt;b&gt;three words describing their Mercury experience&lt;/b&gt;. It&#039;s human to have &lt;b&gt;habits which we are not aware of&lt;/b&gt;. Actually, not being aware of many aspects of our daily lives is essential for our survival. If humans had to think about how to handle a glass of water or the letterbox then life would be somewhat slow and exhausting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there&#039;s a downside to this. We can&#039;t consider aspects which we are not aware of. For example, when people in our environment act or react in certain ways we tend to think that the cause for this must be related to them, simply because that&#039;s what our perception suggests.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately, most of the time it&#039;s also related to us...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At Mercury, you&#039;ll receive &lt;b&gt;valuable personal feedback&lt;/b&gt;. If you give a prepared speech, your personal evaluator will give you an oral and a written evaluation with respect to your personal as well as the speech project&#039;s objectives. You will also receive individual feedack from most of the other listeners. Feedback will always be open and constructive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You wouldn&#039;t be the first person on earth who wonders &lt;b&gt;how you would judge your own performance&lt;/b&gt;, though... Therefore, Mercury is proud to provide its members with &lt;b&gt;professional video feedback&lt;/b&gt;. A few days after our meetings speakers and evaluators can watch themselves on videos which we upload to a protected Internet storage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The &lt;b&gt;objective of the Toastmasters format is to learn to improve the effectiveness of communication&lt;/b&gt;. In the field of speech delivery, we specifically work on the improvement of our behaviour as presenters and therefore video feedback is highly valuable. For example, we often perceive our pacing, our voice and our body language differently to how it comes across. Qualified evaluations from club members help us to become more aware of what we really did during our performances, and video feedback is a forther step towards the &lt;b&gt;awareness we strive for&lt;/b&gt;. In other words it helps us even more to &lt;b&gt;align our self-perception to the impression we give to others&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At Mercury Toastmasters, &lt;b&gt;your videos stay online and are linked to your personal record&lt;/b&gt; which we keep in our protected online member area. &lt;p&gt;Several speakers who give either prepared or impromptu speeches, evaluators, presenters and other functionaries carry out our meetings.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;But while many of our German guests say that they aren&#039;t sure whether they would be able to give a speech at the level they have experienced at our meetings, many of our German members see it differently:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It&#039;s much safer to give a prepared speech than to be the main presenter for the evening, or give an impromptu speech, or even a qualified evaluation of a speech. The reason is that you can rehearse all aspects of your prepared speech beforehand. This of course includes looking up the meaning and pronounciation of any words you&#039;re not sure about, in order to express exactly what you mean. And you won&#039;t forget these words quickly!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Mercury Toastmasters is not a language school. But we&#039;re an &lt;b&gt;excellent training platform for practising your English&lt;/b&gt; and getting straightforward but friendly feedback on it! At each meeting, our Grammarian looks for good and not so good use of language.
